About This
- The Mega Molecules DNA Model Set offers an engaging, hands-on way for students to explore and understand the structure and function of DNA. As they construct the model, students are introduced to the concept of nucleotides—compounds made from a phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar, and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine, thymine, cytosine, or guanine. The height of the assembled model is approximately 16 inches.
- Students assemble individual nucleotides and combine them into a DNA strand using a prescribed base sequence. Once the first strand is complete, they construct the complementary strand by matching the correct base pairs—adenine with thymine, and cytosine with guanine. They also gain experience with directionality and molecular bonding, as the components are joined using flexible connectors that represent covalent bonds.
- After constructing both strands, students use hydrogen bonds to connect the paired bases to form a complete double-stranded DNA molecule. Using the included acrylic rod and base, they display their finished model vertically. The structure resembles a ladder, with sugar-phosphate backbones forming the sides and base pairs forming the rungs. This visual and tactile model makes it easy to imagine how DNA coils into the familiar double-helix shape.
